CRYSTAL JELLYFISH // Martin Stevens

The Crystal Jellyfish, Aequorea victoria, is commonly found in waters off the west coast of America! In 2009, this species was spotted in British waters for the first time and sightings have been reported on occasion since!

This hydrozoan species is a bioluminescent jellyfish and actually is best known as the source of two proteins involved in bioluminescence! These are aequorin and the green fluorescent protein (GFP). GFP is used as a reporter gene and was originally isolated from this jellyfish species by Osamu Shimomura, who in 2008 won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work surrounding GFP!
