Explanation: “Beautiful Nebula discovered between the Balance [Libra] & the Serpent [Serpens] …” begins the description of the 5th entry in 18th century astronomer Charles Messier’s famous catalog of nebulae and star clusters. Though it appeared to Messier to be fuzzy and round and without stars, Messier 5 (M5) is now known to be a globular star cluster, 100,000 stars or more, bound by gravity and packed into a region around 165 light-years in diameter. It lies some 25,000 light-years away. Roaming the halo of our galaxy, globular star clusters are ancient members of the Milky Way. M5 is one of the oldest globulars, its stars estimated to be nearly 13 billion years old. The beautiful star cluster is a popular target for earthbound telescopes. Even close to its dense core, the cluster’s red and blue giant stars, and rejuvenated blue stragglers stand out with yellowish and blue hues in this sharp color image.⠀

UFO shapes: An examination of global configurations

With so many different designs of UFO’s being reported all around the world, is there any way that they can be categorized in an orderly manner that makes sense? Why have the shapes of UFO’s changed over the years? Can these different configurations all come from the same extraterrestrial “manufacturing plant”? This article will explore the six main types of UFO’s which have been reported since the beginning of modern day Ufology…

“Osiris, Ausser (Ausor)–or Wizzer (Wsjr), is the original Green Man–he is the land and the earth in his representation of mankind migrating through cycles of consciousness. He is the seed, self, sun and universe, enabling consciousness to express itself as a manifestation in the physical, earthly realm.  As such, he is associated with all phases of agricultural processes and to the symbolism of the tree of life…” - from  Why is Osiris Green? by Patricia Awyan

Amasunzu hairstyle of the Tutsi

Amasunzu is an elaborate hairstyle traditionally worn by Rwandan men and unmarried women, with the hair styled into crests, frequently described as crescent-shaped. The hairstyle indicated social status, and men who did not wear Amasunzu were looked on with suspicion until the 20th century. The style was also worn by unmarried women after the age of 18–20 years, indicating that they were of marriageable age.

Uraeus of Senusret II

This uraeus was discovered by Flinders Petrie in 1920 during his excavations around the Pyramid of Senusret II at Lahun. The rearing cobra, known as a uraeus, was a symbol of royalty, worn at the forehead.

The golden uraeus is of solid gold, 6.7 cm (2.6 in), black eyes of granite, a snake head of deep ultramarine lapis lazuli, the flared cobra hood of dark carnelian inlays, and inlays of amazonite. For mounting on the king’s crown, two loops in the rear-supporting tail of the cobra provide the attachment points.

Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, reign of Senusret II, ca. 1897-1878. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 46694

earthstory:

Fossil Water in Africa

Is water a renewable or nonrenewable resource? Like many questions in science, the answer is “it depends”. Surface water, in ideal conditions, is replenished through rainfall and the hydrologic cycle (although like we’ve seen in recent droughts—such as the one in California—this not always the case). Groundwater can be replenished this way too, however, some aquifers contain fossil water—very old water that is definitely a finite resource.

Do You Dream of Terra-Two? (2019)

When an Earth-like planet is discovered, a team of six teens, along with three veteran astronauts, embark on a twenty-year trip to set up a planet for human colonization—but find that space is more deadly than they ever could have imagined.

Have you ever hoped you could leave everything behind?

Have you ever dreamt of a better world?

Can a dream sustain a lifetime?

A century ago, an astronomer discovered an Earth-like planet orbiting a nearby star. She predicted that one day humans would travel there to build a utopia. Today, ten astronauts are leaving everything behind to find it. Four are veterans of the twentieth century’s space-race.

And six are teenagers who’ve trained for this mission most of their lives.

It will take the team twenty-three years to reach Terra-Two. Twenty-three years locked in close quarters. Twenty-three years with no one to rely on but each other. Twenty-three years with no rescue possible, should something go wrong.

And something always goes wrong.
