Bioluminescent Deep-Sea Siphonophore

The siphonophore appears to be a single large organism, but is actually a colony of individual zooids. These zooids function together as a single unit and some of them can’t survive without the others. This video captured a deep sea siphonophore that is also bioluminescent.

Thought that was a jrpg boss descending from the heavens

fun fact: human’s eyes are not supposed to glow at night because our eyes are missing the tapetum lucidum - a thing in some animal’s eyes (like cats, dogs, etc) that allow them to see at night

humans dont have that, therefore in regular light like this, that dude’s eyes should have not been glowing

so therein lies the question….. extreme body mod? did he tape lights to his eyeballs? ….or is that something nonhuman?

This here has to be the best beginning of a horror film we call life ! BRRRRUUUHHHH

Braiding is an ancestral art that has very cultural and ethnical roots, especially in Africa. I’m Gabonese and it is a part of my African identity and I made it my mission to show people the beauty within these strands of hair and that braids are not just a protective style: they are art pieces.
I’m a braid artist.

travisgmoore:

Robotech is my all-time favorite cartoon, due in no small part to the amazing characters. Claudia Grant was the rock of the bridge crew during the First Robotech War, holding strong even after suffering arguably the most heartbreaking tragedy of the entire series. In the end, she made the ultimate sacrifice, but used her final moments to save the life of her best friend. A generation later, during the Second Robotech War, her nephew Bowie Grant goes AWOL to pursue true love with Musica, inciting an alien revolt, and ultimately helping to defeat the Robotech Masters. As a kid, this kind of mature storytelling blew my mind, so different from sanitized American cartoons, and it still holds up to this day. I really hope they eventually do the live-action movie (or even a high-end television series).

blacknerdproblems:

Update: It appears Facebook reversed their removal, claiming it having been a “mistake.” As far as we are aware, Facebook has not responded to publisher Silver Sprocket about their video being taken down in error. You can read more here.

On one end of the spectrum is Twitter, whose do-nothing approach to threats and harassment has left us perplexed and annoyed for years. On the other end is Facebook with an algorithm of mythical lore so complex and ever-changing that it’s basically turned into a sci-fi plot that openly doesn’t make sense. While Facebook seems to hide that it has no idea what it’s doing anymore with its “Community Standards,” the casualties of its takedowns continue to pile, and now includes the short animated film Your Black Friend.

Your Black Friend is adapted from Ben Passmore’s award-winning comic published by indie outlet, Silver Sprocket. The story chronicles the alienation Black men regularly face as well as their challenges with anti-blackness. As Your Black Friend racked up views on Facebook and Youtube, Facebook seemingly decided the three-minute cartoon attacks people on the basis of their race, which presumably refers to white people. The deep groan you just felt is justified even more when you consider the work that goes into an independent production, particularly on such a raw subject as being on the receiving end of racism. Now add a platform with north of a billion active users a day deciding to cut you off from your audience. A fair question at this point is, has anyone not had a negative experience with Facebook’s takedowns in one way or another?

Read on here. [x]
