Abbott #1

Hugo Award-nominated novelist Saladin Ahmed (Black Bolt) and artist Sami Kivelä (Beautiful Canvas) present one woman’s search for the truth that destroyed her family. Hard-nosed, chain-smoking tabloid reporter Elena Abbott investigates a series of grisly crimes that the police have ignored. Crimes she knows to be the work of dark occult forces. Forces that took her husband from her. Forces she has sworn to destroy.

Geosesarma dennerle, or the purple vampire crab, is a species of small land-living crab which is found on Java, Indonesia. Described by scientists in 2015, it is already popular in the aquarium trade, in which all species of Geosesarma crabs are often called vampire crabs. (x x x x x)

Special thanks to @roksyk for showing me this species!

this was a good crab until I saw the name and now it is a great crab

“In rare lucid moments you see that you are enslaved. You tell yourself that The Service is a helpful interface providing your mind with continual aid and stimulation, but you know it’s a lie. Patrick Whiteside can help you. He doesn’t require much: An open mind. Determination. The ability to make sacrifices.“

Sunday, January 21, 2018 – Book Club: Akata Witch

Greetings True Believers! Join us this month for our next Book Club selection, Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorofor!

There are plenty of copies available at local libraries and cheap on Amazon, so you’ll have plenty of time to join us.

We’ll meet on January 21st to discuss it at a yet to be chosen location, (let us know if you have any suggestions, preferably a bar or coffee shop, not a restaurant.)

RSVP HERE!

Excelsior…

Affectionately dubbed “the Nigerian Harry Potter,” Akata Witch weaves together a heart-pounding tale of magic, mystery, and finding one’s place in the world.

Twelve-year-old Sunny lives in Nigeria, but she was born American. Her features are African, but she’s albino. She’s a terrific athlete, but can’t go out into the sun to play soccer. There seems to be no place where she fits in. And then she discovers something amazing—she is a “free agent” with latent magical power. Soon she’s part of a quartet of magic students, studying the visible and invisible, learning to change reality. But will it be enough to help them when they are asked to catch a career criminal who knows magic too?

Evolution Series: The Sea Dragons

Mosasaurs were a group of lizards that returned to the sea to become apex predators. They replaced many iconic sea monsters in their conquest of the Cretaceous oceans.

*The animals represented here are not to scale and don’t represent a direct line of descent, but rather plausible models for how this amazing transition happened.*

You may have seen my penguin evolution infographic. That one was done for funsies, but it was modeled after a series that I made originally for my Patreonthat I’ll be uploading on here! If you’re interested in stuff like this though, consider supporting me there; there’s a lot of other cool exclusive stuff to see.

wehaveproof:

The dramatic inflections of the narrator are over-the-top to the point of being humorous, but accurate nonetheless.
These psychodelicately colored little devils commonly called the “Peacock Mantis Shrimp” a/k/a “Thumb-Splitters” see 10 times more colors than the human eye, ultraviolet light included. Their little hammer-like defense appendage strikes it’s prey with the same force as a 22 caliber bullet. They have no known predators and for obvious reason they make a poor aquarium member.
