Pelican Nebula Close Up : The prominent ridge of emission featured in this vivid skyscape is designated IC 5067. Part of a larger emission region with a distinctive shape, popularly called The Pelican Nebula, the ridge spans about 10 light-years and follows the curve of the cosmic pelicans head and neck. Fantastic, dark shapes inhabiting the view are clouds of cool gas and dust sculpted by energetic radiation from young, hot, massive stars. But stars are also forming within the dark shapes. Twin jets emerging from the tip of the long, dark tendril left of center are the telltale signs of an embedded protostar cataloged as Herbig-Haro 555 . In fact, other Herbig-Haro objects indicating the presence of protostars are found within the frame. The Pelican Nebula itself, also known as IC 5070, is about 2,000 light-years away. M13: The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules : In 1716, English astronomer Edmond Halley noted, This is but a little Patch, but it shews itself to the naked Eye, when the Sky is serene and the Moon absent. Of course, M13 is now less modestly recognized as the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, one of the brightest globular star clusters in the northern sky. Telescopic views reveal the spectacular clusters hundreds of thousands of stars. At a distance of 25,000 light-years, the cluster stars crowd into a region 150 light-years in diameter. Approaching the cluster core upwards of 100 stars could be contained in a cube just 3 light-years on a side. For comparison, the closest star to the Sun is over 4 light-years away. Along with the clusters dense core, the outer reaches of M13 are highlighted in this sharp color image. The clusters evolved red and blue giant stars show up in yellowish and blue tints. via NASA

The Moeritherium (‘the beast from Lake Moeris’) species were pig-like animals that lived about 37-35 million years ago during the Eocene epoch, and resembled modern tapirs or pygmy hippopotamuses (however, they are not believed to be related to either of those animals). These prehistoric mammals are related to the elephant and, more distantly, the sea cow. M. lyonsi was smaller than most or all later proboscideans, standing only 2.3 ft high at the shoulder and weighing 518 lbs. The shape of their teeth suggests that they ate soft water vegetation.
743-712 BC From the Napatan Period, reign of Piye (Piankhy), found at el-Kurru, Sudan. The crystal ball amulet is surmounted by a gold head of Hathor crowned with disc and horns. The ball is bored vertically and has a gold disc at the base on which it stands. This probably used to contain substances believed to have magical properties.
