sixpenceee:

Lyuba is a female woolly mammoth calf who died 41,800 years ago at the age of 30 to 35 days. Lyuba is believed to have suffocated by inhaling mud while bogged down in deep mud in the bed of a river her herd was crossing. Lyuba appears to have been healthy at the time of her death.

By examining Lyuba’s teeth, researchers hope to gain insight into what caused Ice Age mammals, including the mammoths, to become extinct at the end of the Pleistocene era around 10,000 years ago

Nature Installations by Nils-Udo

Bavarian artist Nils-Udo works directly with nature to create site-specific installations, which highlight the transient beauty of nature. By using leaves, berries, leaves, branches, and blossoms, Nils-Udo creates colorful pieces, which change and disintegrate within time. Similar to Andy Goldsworthy’s work, Udo’s work showcases the temporariness of nature and its seasons. Nothing is eternal.

Where there is nature there is wonder.

Pipefish –  A Weird Cousin of the Sea Horse

anoceanloverworld:

unquestionably sea horses are one of the most bizarre looking sea creatures. Pipefish, a close cousin is even weirder. Look at these fishes and you will agree with me.

Along with sea horses and sea dragons, the pipefish belong to the group Syngnathidae. There are thousands of species living in the oceans.

Like their sea horse brethren, the male pipefishes also do parenting duties like carrying eggs and also “giving birth”.

Most of the pipefish species live in the coral reefs. Some can also be spotted in sea grass beds. Here are some more photos of them.

I hope that you will enjoy this post.

black-culture:

Kehinde Wiley’s paintings often blur the boundaries between traditional and contemporary modes of representation. Rendered in a realistic mode–while making references to specific Old Master paintings–Wiley creates a fusion of period styles, ranging from French Rococo, Islamic architecture and West African textile design to urban hip hop and the “Sea Foam Green” of a Martha Stewart Interiors color swatch. Wiley’s slightly larger than life size figures are depicted in a heroic manner, as their poses connote power and spiritual awakening. Wiley’s portrayal of masculinity is filtered through these poses of power and spirituality.

First Dinosaur Tail Found Preserved in Amber

First Dinosaur Tail Found Preserved in Amber:

sci-universe:

The tail of a 99-million-year-old dinosaur, including bones, soft tissue, and even feathers, has been found preserved in amber, according to a report published today in the journal Current Biology.

While individual dinosaur-era feathers have been found in amber, and evidence for feathered dinosaurs is captured in fossil impressions, this is the first time that scientists are able to clearly associate well-preserved feathers with a dinosaur, and in turn gain a better understanding of the evolution and structure of dinosaur feathers.

We clearly need a new Jurassic Park movie featuring cute feathery dinosaurs.

Okay this is really really cool BUT IT IS CRIMINAL to leave out the funniest part of this story.

The paleontologist who “discovered” this sample didn’t dig it up,  he and his team found it in an amber market where the amber it was preserved in had been shaped and was being sold as jewelry

This is both ridiculous and exciting though, because on one hand it’s a shame this sample was cut and shaped before anyone who knew what it was could get their hands on it, it also gives us an idea of how many other samples might be in that particular amber mine.

Also this amazing quote from Xing:

“I was not sure that (the trader) really understood how important this specimen was, but he did not raise the price.”

This Felt Artist Turns Fabric into Organic, Alien Creations | The Creators Project

An ancient fabric, felt can also be manufactured into unusual styles; creating limitless works of art that stretch and inspire the imagination. Influenced by nature, Dutch artist Marjolein Dallinga uses felt as her primary medium, creating strange structures like toadstools, caterpillars, and spore-ridden, plant-like structures that appear lifelike when placed in natural environments. Each of her handcrafted creations mimics corals or mold-like matter, appear as ethereal and otherworldly as they do organic.

Lina Iris Viktor, Paintings.

Exceptionally gorgeous, mixed media paintings by artist Lina Iris Viktor who describes her artwork as “zen-influenced, blurred lines of the real and the imagined” wherein she “weaves disparate materials and methods belonging both to contemporary and ancient art forms.”  Referring to her stunning creations as “light-works,” they glow with a rhapsodic purity that await deep thought and exploration.
